Deadbolt single or double cylinder

deadbolt single or double cylinder

What’s the difference between a single or double cylinder deadbolt? Essentially, a single has a key entry point on the outside and a latch to open on the inside. Where as, a double cylinder deadbolt is key entry/open on the outside and the inside. Typically, this double sided lock is used in commercial applications and mostly on doors that are entirely glass or have glass inserts. They offer better security for a business in the case of the glass being broken but still they would not be able to unlock a latch.

Double keyed locks can also be a great advantage for the home owner. Especially, if you have a glass entry door. Although, it also has other advantages for the home. For example, it would be ideal to ensure the young children don’t get outside without you knowing. Moreover, it offers the same safety in regards to aging family members who you would not want to wander.

Double cylinder locks are harder to pick than single. Moreover, they offer better security because they have two set of tumblers. Thus, making it too hard for most burglar’s to bother with.

As you can see, double cylinder locks are more secure but what are the disadvantages? They can be difficult to use in an emergency and you can locked yourself in, if you lose the key. Furthermore, local cities and provinces may restrict the use of such locks due fire codes and regulations and building standards.

Although there are options for this. Smart locks with keypads, fingerprints, voice and remote access also come with double keyed locks. Safety wise, these are a much better option and worth looking into!
